Call for Research Papers: Fostering Creativity in the Indian Education System

We are committed to researching and regenerating indigenous modes of creativity.

We understand:

  • Creativity happens in every sphere of life, not just in the arts or a few selected professions;

  • Creativity is not an individual or competitive act but rather emerges from caring relationships. The more we share and collaborate together, the more it grows;

  • Creativity is deeply connected with diversity. It is not sustainable in monoculture;

  • Creativity is not dependent on expensive toys or equipment;

  • Creativity is not just in the head. It involves the heart and the hands;

  • Creativity is not a new fad. It is part of the social-spiritual-material fabric of India and should be nurtured and promoted as such. Jugaad thinking is one common form of creativity;

  • Nature is inherently creative and so are we. Every human being has the capacity for being creative. Being in outdoor natural settings and communing with the rest of nature can help enhance creativity;

  • Indigenous and rural communities have dierent understandings of creativity and childhood which need to be delved into much deeper.

“Flow is being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz.”
                                        -Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

SOME CREATIVITY KILLERS

  • Surveillance: Constantly watching children while they work can make them feel like risk-taking is not safe.

  • Evaluation: Constantly worrying about how one is doing can make children ignore the satisfaction of their accomplishments.

  • Rewards: Excessive use of prizes can deprive children of the intrinsic pleasure of creative activity.

  • Competition: Putting children in a win-lose situation can negate the process of children progressing at their own rates.

  • Over-control: Constantly telling children how to do things can make them feel like their originality is a mistake

Our aim is to raise Rs100 crore to launch 40 creativity labs across the 10 cities to touch the lives of 1,000,000 children. These labs will support local multi-sectoral teams to work together to inspire, establish and encourage creativity-focused models across schools, neighborhoods and communities.

"The most important lesson that man can learn from life, is not that there is pain in this world, but that it is possible for him to transmute it into joy."

TESTIMONIALS

At ITARI, we recognize creativity as an essential skill that should be embedded in the very foundation of education, fostering a generation of thinkers, problem-solvers, and empathetic leaders. Our commitment to creativity is reflected in our teacher training programs, which integrate design thinking, reflective practices, and real-world problem-solving. By equipping educators with these tools, we prepare them to cultivate creativity in their students, creating classrooms that are not just places of learning but environments of exploration and innovation.

I am proud to support the transformative initiative: Indian Creativity Consortium (ICC). Together, we believe that fostering creative thinking in teachers will, in turn, inspire students to become changemakers, building a future where ingenuity, compassion, and adaptability lead the way.

~Priyank Sharma, Faculty, ITARI

The education system of the industrial age, designed for efficiency, produced a reliable workforce through standardised learning. Unfortunately, this one-size-fits-all approach fails to prepare students for a future rife with complexity and uncertainty. The challenges of the 21st century and the fourth industrial revolution demands a new approach to learning: one that prepares our young people to navigate an unknown and complex future. This is where creativity becomes the catalyst for change.

Creativity is the spark that ignites progress, bringing fresh perspective to complex problems. The challenges of the 21st century demands learners who are not just passive recipients of knowledge, but active participants shaping the future.  Creativity is no longer a luxury; it's an educational imperative.

We must envision a world where every child unleashes their creative potential and becomes an agent of positive change. Creativity, is more than artistic expression; it's a mindset – a lens through which students approach challenges with curiosity, empathy, and a drive to innovate.

Through initiatives like Design for Change (DFC) and the "I CAN" approach at Riverside School, our work demonstrates that creativity can be nurtured in every child, regardless of background. This approach centers on student agency – the belief that children can identify problems, envision solutions, and take meaningful action. By engaging them in real-world challenges using design thinking frameworks, schools can foster critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and the belief that the children can make a difference.

In that spirit, I support the Indian Creativity Consortium. May this initiative be a catalyst for igniting the spark of innovation in young minds across the globe.

~Kiran Sethi, Riverside School

At the Good Schools Alliance, we are dedicated to delivering exceptional education while enhancing personal and social development. Our mission is to empower young individuals to chase their dreams. We cultivate an environment that promotes optimal personal and social growth by valuing service, skill, sport, and study equally.

Furthermore, The Teacher’s Academy empowers teachers to help students with the essential 6C competencies: Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Character, and Citizenship. Together, we forge a path for success and readiness for the world ahead.
We strongly endorse the mission of the Indian Creativity Consortium.
